South Opens Today

Kevin and Stacy Jennings' newest restaurant, South, opens today in the former Restaurant Savannah location.  Excitingly, they have tapped Jeremy Sabo as chef for the Southern-fared offerings while simultaneously promoting him to Executive Chef of Urban Food Group.

Here's how their press release describes the food:

Lunch and dinner at South begins with warm bacon-cheddar biscuits and hushpuppies. Starters ($6 - $10) range from Lump Crab Cakes with sweet corn relish to Grilled Quail with a Stone Ground Grit Cake and apple slaw. With a nod to the Jennings’ tenure in the Lowcountry, Sabo offers a Charleston style She Crab Bisque with a crispy crab fritter. Entrees ($14 – $21) include Country Fried Steak, Braised Pork Shoulder & Fresh Bacon, Carolina Shrimp & Grits, Frogmore Stew, and a gracious plenty of sides ($3) that will encourage even the carnivore to build their own vegetable plate of Collards, Pole Beans and Mac & Cheese. No Southern meal would be complete without a sweet; Pastry Chef Eric Akbari tempts us with updated classics in his Blueberry Cobbler and cosmopolitan take on Coconut Cream Pie ($7 - $8), though the Peanut Butter & Banana Montecristo is an original, and not to be missed.

Bar side, guests will wash down complimentary pork rinds with cocktails that tell Southern tales – Mint Juleps served in traditional silver tumblers and an artisan bourbon flight showcasing the best from Kentucky. South’s wine list speaks of the South as well, showcasing wines from North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia and Alabama, and throughout the United States. 15 wines will be available by the glass, and 100 by the bottle.

I personally am very happy they are keeping the Southern theme started by Restaurant Savannah and can't wait to experience Chef Sabo's interpretations.

Sad Day for Raleighing

It is with an extremely heavy heart that I come to you with the news that Dana has decided to discontinue his work on Raleighing.com.  As I am sure all of you know, Dana is an amazingly intelligent person who truly has unique, insightful, respectful, and helpful views on our wonderful city.  His astounding grasp on many subjects along with his inexplicable ability to stay abreast of so many important Raleigh issues has been a foundation of this site and is surely the primary reason our readership has grown to such heights.  It is absolutely one of the motivations behind my conceptualization of the site and the work I have put into it since.

The impact to the future of Raleighing is yet to be determined.  I'll of course need a little time to decide exactly what approach I'd like to take.  Demands from my non-Raleighing life (i.e. most of my life) have made it very difficult to write lately but hopefully things are returning to normal for me now in that regard.  I should have some idea of next steps shortly.  Your patience is appreciated.

So, please join with me in saying "thank you" to Dana for sharing his thoughts, insights, time, and commitment over the past 18 months.  He will absolutely be missed.

Luckily for me, he and I also happen to be good friends so I don't have to say goodbye.

Raleighing Mail Bag: This Makes It All Worth It

Received this email in our inbox the other day.  Just what I needed to hear to make me want to continue working so hard on a site which is nothing more than a labor of love.  I wish the person had left his or her actual email so I could thank them personally, but no such luck.  So, if you're still reading, thank you so very much.  You are the reason this site exists and your happiness is all I strive for.

Dude, I used to look forward to checking your site everyday, but lately it has really sucked.  People want to hear and talk about real developments and events in Raleigh.  We don't want to hear your opinion on pointless crap.  I could name a dozen recent developments that deserve to be posted.  I don't know what your deal is, but you need to keep your site up to date with real sh** if you want true Raleighers like myself to keep logging on.
