Campbell School of Law Contemplates Downtown Move

WRAL reported yesterday that the Dean of the Campbell School of Law is considering the school's move to downtown Raleigh from Buies Creek, NC. In the report, WRAL said that Raleigh is the largest state capital without a law school.

The move would be a great blessing for downtown Raleigh. The students and faculty would create much foot traffic, demand retail and basic food outlets nearby, and most likely move many residents to downtown. The many commuting Raleigh residents would have a safer drive home at night than they currently have.

Old_wach I haven't spoken to anyone about this move, however one opportunity for the school is glaringly obvious; the 9-story old Wachovia building at 227 Fayetteville Street (pictured on the left in the photo). Walking distance from the areas courthouses and libraries, the building would provide ample space and has adjacent parking for faculty and an underground connector to the Moore Square lot. The building's first floor, formerly Wachovia's local branch, is actually a 25 foot tall open space one floor down from Fayetteville and Wilmington Streets' elevation. This provides an excellent opportunity to renovate the space into two large auditorium style classrooms. The building is in need of repair. However, a law school generally doesn't need class A office space, something this building will never provide.

Hopefully the Campbell School of Law can find ample, reasonably priced space in downtown Raleigh and create a huge win-win situation.

Happy Halloween from the nuts at Lulu.com!

  Lulus in Costume!
  Originally uploaded by Futuregirl.

Have I mentioned that I now work for the best company in the area?  Well, if you didn't believe me before, one look at this picture and you'll quickly see just how right I am!  Gotta love a place where you are ridiculed for not wearing a costume...

Anyway, for some extra Halloween fun, play this "Can You Locate the Lulu?" game.  See if you can find:

  • Wonder Woman
  • Indiana Jones
  • Dr. Girlfriend
  • Hobo Doc Aquatic
  • David Bowie
  • The wench
  • Charlotte's Web
  • A pirate
  • A unicorn
  • A biker (the pedaling kind)
  • A postal worker
  • A gypsy
  • Dr. Alfred Einstein
  • A doctor
  • Peter Parker
  • A farmer and his cow
  • A Virginia Tech football witch (?)
  • A nerd

And finally, winner of my vote for best overall costume:

  • Tim the Enchanter ("What is the capital of Assyria?" "There are some who call me... 'Tim'?")

See?  Wasn't that fun?  Hope you're having as much fun as we are!  Happy Halloween!

Dolly Saves Zippin Pippin

Pippin Roller coaster enthusiasts across the nation are celebrating the fact that Carolina Crossroads, Dolly and Randy Parton's new theme park in Roanoke Rapids, won the auction to save the Zippin Pippin from the failed Libertyland in Memphis. Formerly known as "the Pippin", the 1923 wooden coaster is one of the oldest standing coasters in the country. The 70' tall, 1:30 minute ride which reaches 40mph was made by the legendary Philadelphia Toboggan Company. It's known for being rough and having great air time, especially for riders in the train's rear seats.

The ride was Elvis Presley's favorite ride and in 1977 he rented out Libertyland to entertain 10 guests one night. During the night he rode the coaster for 2 hours straight. Unfortunately it was his last public appearance as he died 8 days later. More photos of the ride and the sadly abandoned Libertyland are at this page.

(Yeah, this isn't necessarily a Raleigh proper entry, however it shows just how desperate we are for a theme park and a coaster anywhere near here. Carolina Crossroads will be about an hour and a half away from us, but it isn't close enough.)

Wood in Running With Scissors

Er_wood Running With Scissors, featuring Raleigh's Evan Rachael Wood, begins its second week in national theaters today. The pain-inducing movie starring Annette Bening, Brian Cox, Alec Baldwin, and Joseph Fiennes (among others) centers around a boy in a dysfunctional family being turned over to a therapist's own dysfunctional family.  The movie only  received a 5.1 rating from cin-o-matic's sources and 1.5 stars in the News & Observer.

Wood, the daughter of Theatre In The Park's Ira David Wood, III, has now been in 12 American feature films and has many more in the pipeline. Next year she'll star in King of California with Michael Douglas (An unstable dad who after getting out of a mental institution tries to convince his daughter that there's Spanish gold buried somewhere under suburbia) and In Bloom with Uma Thurman.

Design Expo Brings "Hidden Gems"

Saturday marked the beginning of Design Expo Raleigh ’06; a two week celebration of the designers who call the Triangle home. The theme for this year's inaugural event is “Hidden Gems: Great Design in Our Own Backyard.” We have a powerful and wonderful design community – it’s time for the rest of the world to know about it.

The purpose of Design Expo Raleigh is to showcase great design to the public and to give designers, both professionals and students, a forum to display and discuss their work. Among the diverse applied arts to be represented at Design Expo Raleigh ’06 are Animation, Architecture, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, and Textile/Fashion Design. In addition, there will be lectures featuring both the educational and professional aspects of each discipline, and tours of specific projects giving the public and other designers a unique perspective on a designer’s creation. Also scheduled are gala receptions and a Designer Market allowing designers to sell their works directly to the public.

It is the goal of Design Expo Raleigh ’06 to stimulate dialogue between students of all ages, professionals, and the general public about design and its role in our lives. Come be a part of it! We are actively looking for volunteers and sponsors who want to show that great design matters to them.

The main exhibition is at 319 W. Martin Street. Other events will take place in other locations around Raleigh and the Triangle. See the calendar of events for information about specific events.
